First Amendment Caveat
Anyone can post anything on the web. Take what you find with a few grains of salt. Use common sense. Look for second opinions.
Internet security and filtering
Virus Protection
If you run on a Wintel platform this is essential (and becoming more so on other platforms too). If you run Microsoft applications this is a very good idea. If you don't keep your virus pattern files updated this is effectively useless, and you better have good backups because your system will be trashed sooner or later. NEVER open unexpected attachments! Check for security patches regularly.
Objectionable Sites and filtering
Your choice. Many filter options are available. None are completely reliable; some will block legitimate sites too. Teaching appropriate use is at least as effective as most filters (for browsing, not email/spam).
Monitoring and Logging
Monitoring (children's) use of the internet is very strongly recommended; this gives you an opportunity to teach effective use. Logging gives objective evidence of inappropriate use. If you log you also need to review the logs regularly. Logging can be effective if there is unsupervised use. You may need to protect the machine doing the logging.
Firewalls
If you are connected with a cable modem or DSL service, this is essential, or your machine will eventually get cracked. Reasonable personal firewall products are available from many sources. Firewalls will slow down intruders; locks are for honest people. Don't be afraid to pull the plug; report cracks to the FBI.
Spam
An unfortunate fact of life on the internet. Depending on the expert, 5 to 35% of all email is spam. Some ISPs offer filtering using services like BrightLight or Trend Micro. Reporting spam with services like SpamCop can be personally rewarding. When in doubt, delete. Watch out for email worms (honor virus) and urban legends.
Backups
If you have data that needs to be preserved, you need to back it up regularly. I recommend using three backup sets and rotating them; this gives you more than one version to try to recover from. Rebuilding is an option so you don't have to backup more than your data files. Copying data to a second hard disk is a great plus (but does not eliminate the need for offline backup).
