The Province of Agrigento (whose name was Girgenti until 1927), officially the Free municipal consortium of Agrigento since 2015, is located in the south-west of Sicily and includes 43 municipalities (comuni).

The locality name "Agrigento" or "Girgenti", written on the labels of many old sulphur, celestine, gypsum, and aragonite specimens, usually is not referred to the municipal territory of Agrigento (Girgenti), but to a larger territory in many cases identifiable with the province of Agrigento (Girgenti).

Moqui Marbles Formula /Images/picture.jpg Southern Utah or Northern Arizona (Navaho Sandstone formation) September 2000 Matrix hematite This twinned concretion was acquired from JRsÊRock Shop, Post Falls, Idaho
Moqui marbles are concretions of iron and usually have a sandstone center stained red or yellow from iron. The Navaho Sandstone formation that produces Moqui Marbles was laid down at the beginning of the Jurassic era approximately 190 million years ago.
Moqui Marbles probably formed at a time when the original sand dunes that later became the Navaho formation was under a sea. The iron in the marbles was probably from unstable Limonite, which forms a gel under pressure. Volcanic venting produced bubbles in the Limonite gel, heat converted the Limonite to stable Hematite and iron which entrapped sand from the seabottom environment. Pressure on the cooling 'bubble' compressed the hematite into a hard and stable shell.
Moqui Marbles are found in areas where the Navaho Sandstone formation has nearly eroded away and is again forming sand dunes. After weathering out of the sandstone they are wind polished. These 'fossil bubbles' are a real geological oddity.

This mineral occurs in the rocks of northern Dartmoor where the moltern granite made contact with other existing rocks in the area. It was mined in an area where Copper and Arsenic also occurred. Pyrrhotine, also called Pyrrhotite, will stick to a magnet due to its high iron content.

Known locally as 'Shining' or 'Looking Glass' ore. The hematite from this Dartmoor mine was of a high, uniform, quality; it was used to make the battleship grey paint that covered the ships in the Royal Navy. This is the 'Type Locality' for "Battleship Grey". The mine closed in 1969; I have seen references that it had been worked by hand, from the 1820s, until it closed.

This is one of several types of iron ore mined mainly in the 19th Century in Devon. Most came from huge opencast workings, but there were some underground workings in the area of Birch Tor. Specimens are still found in the area, left behind by the miners who were mostly looking for Tin ores.
